2005 Mazda RX 8 check engine light?

Alright, so I drive a 2005 Mazda RX 8 and in the last couple weeks it sounds like its having a hard time starting. My Dad knows a good bit about cars and he said it sounds like it needs new spark plugs. Yesterday while I was driving, I was probably going about 60mph, and my check engine light started flashing, and then it went off. Other than the hard time starting, it seems like everything else is fine, so I was just wondering if having bad spark plugs would cause this?
 
Cambelt or any related parts, however is not a joke, you better have your car checked before something major may happen, good luck mate.
