2005 M50 is not starting

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum. I've been a member of another MC forum for about a year now but I found this one when I was searching for answers to my problem with my bike and it seems like a great site. I ride an 05 Suzuki M50 with about 10,000 on the clock. Its due for service at 11k. Last one was done at around 7500. I rode it out last night. Came home it was fine. Let it sit for a little while then put the cover on it before going to bed. Went out there today to take it out. Turned the key to the on position. Everything was fine. Engine switch to on position. Heard the starter make that noise. Then hit the start button and click. The next time I tried, the electronics started acting pretty funny. Turned the key to the on position and nothing came on until I hit the headlight dimmer button. After trying a few more times, nothing comes on when I turn the key to the on position! I've never worked on bikes before but I used to do a lot of work on my car. Checked the service manual and it pointed me to the starter relay and loose wiring. I checked these things out and they appear normal. Fuses seem fine. Does anyone have any ideas? It's beautiful outside and being grounded today is killing me. Thanks

Have you checked to see if the battery is holding its charge? I read somewhere that if it's less then 1/2 of normal charge it may not crank you over then will die. Sorry I also don't remember what the amperage is supposed to be.

Yep, perfect description of a dead battery....or
Main cables loose at one end or the other....or
Loose main fuse.
That first noise you hear is NOT the starter but the fuel pump (probably).

Maybe NOW would be a good time for the next "scheduled" maintenance !! :bluethum:

:PNow I've got to admit that mine is a 05 M50 with 11,500+ miles (I've only had it a year and 1/2). Original batteryfrom when I bought it, but except for feb and march of this year I ride at least 3x a week to work unless the weather calls for snows or icing temps by the time I knock off @ midnight. And my 11,000 mi check up was solid and good to go, just basic stuff. Hopefully it's the battery because it's sat a lot. It's a pain, but simple to fix, new battery and ride more!

Thanks for all the replies. I figured the problem out and it was actually a loose fuse on the starter relay. Had to disconnect and pull the battery to get to it. Re routed some of the wires while I was in there too. I've been good to go since. Took it out on a great ride in the blue ridge mountains today.

Had the same problem again. Exact same symptoms. This time I just pulled the entire starter relay out of the bike. Based on the sound and where its coming from I'm pretty sure its the problem. One of the fuse housings is much looser than the other. The fuse that is attached to the relay on the same side of the positive wire from the battery is very very tight. Has to be pried out. There's also a piece of metal that runs from the top of the nut on that side of the relay directly to the fuse housing. The other fuse is pretty loose and doesn't have that extra piece of metal. Is this normal? I was tempted to open the entire thing up but don't have the time or patience to do it right now.
