use the link (attached) to compare all aspects of the 2 cars you're interested in.

the mazda 3 s comes in a hatchback or a sedan, the hatchback being a bit more expensive.

overall, it looks like the toyota comes out on top in terms of price, gas mileage, and options. looks and performance-wise, i'd choose the mazda.

i would simply pick the mazda...
You will see about 15 to 20 corollas for every mazda 3 so they are a little more unique. Mazdas also have rotary engines which is something cool. The Xrs and the 3 are very similar when it comes to power, if your looking at he highest trim available for the 3.(2.3-liter four-cylinder that puts out 156 hp)

I don't agree with the 1st answer. Only one Mazda model has a rotary engine & the 3 S isn't it. Only the RX8 has that motor. But when it does come to comparisons, the Mazda is a much better looking ride. I owned an 06 Mazda 3 S (see my 360) & I enjoyed it. I regret getting rid of it. Anyway, the Corolla will get better mpg's, but only by a marginal amount. But it's bland looking & unremarkable. The 2.3L 4 cyl engine has VVT & a 5 speed a/t optional. Very nice. If you want top of the line with Bose stereo, leather, & sunroof, you'll need to hunt down a grand touring model. Personally, I would just break down & buy one new. Even used, the Mazda will not be cheap b/c it's such a highly rated car. I do believe the 04 was the 1st year of the current design. In speed, I drove my Mazda at 90 mph and it was very smooth. I did find changing the oil to be a pain in the butt though. You'll need all metric tools and a torque wrench in foot &inch pounds. See link. I would not trust an all purpose oil changing joint to do it b/c they won't torque anything correctly. The oil filter cartridge is composite and can be easily cross threaded. Anyway, I hope I helped some. G'day.
