2004 Pontiac GTO gas tank problems!?

I have a very perplexing problem that has recently developed when I attempt to fill my car's gas tank. About a month ago, I noticed that the gas pump at the station would shut off, as if the car was full, while I was still filling the tank. The problem has worsened to where I have to pump the handle of the gas pump about every 4-5 seconds to get the car to fill completely. Have you ever heard of anything similar before, or do you have any ideas on what could be causing this? Please help!

The problem has worsened to where I have to pump the handle of the gas pump about every 4-5 seconds to get the car to fill completely. When the pump clicks off I can actually hear a bubbling noise coming from the inside of the tank, as if air is trying to escape. Have you ever heard of anything similar before, or do you have any ideas on what could be causing this? Could this be the vent line or the tank?

Could be as simple as a vaccuum issue. Need to check the breather tube to make sure the tank is venting as you fill. If the breather tube is kinked or blocked the car will "hiccup" with fuel and cause the pump to shut off.

An obstructed filler neck vent line will cause the pump nozzle to shut off like that and make refueling difficult but it is not the vent line causing that problem on your 2004 GTO. Your refueling problem is caused by the fuel filler neck design and the pump nozzle shutting off like that is a common problem on the 04-06 GTO. When the Holden Monaro was badged as a Pontiac GTO the fuel tank was moved from below the trunk floor to inside the trunk and so the fuel filler neck is very short and does not have much slope and that causes the fuel flow in the filler neck to splash back against the nozzle tip and shut the nozzle off. There are a few things you can do to make refueling easier. One thing you can do is to not insert the nozzle so deep into the filler neck and also pump the fuel slower. But if you insist on pumping the fuel faster, another thing you can do is to swivel the nozzle handle upside down and insert the nozzle upside down into the filler neck, thereby positioning the shut off sensor aspirator hole at the tip of the nozzle against the top of the filler neck rather than the bottom and making it less sensitive to splash back. The other thing you can do is to replace your OEM fuel cap with a Stant "InStant Fill" fuel cap. The reason that works is because it does not allow the nozzle to be inserted so deep into the filler neck. And it has other benefits as well, such as eliminating the need to remove the cap when refueling and it eliminates the nuisance of the cap hanging down against the paint when refueling. The Stant "InStant Fill" fuel caps are also compatible with OBDII emission specifications and will not adversely affect the EVAP system.
