I have a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer and it has a little over 87,000 miles. It was always a very smooth running vehicle now it seems like it's trying. Bear with me while I attempt to explain the problem. When i go to accelerate it's almost like its pulling like it tries so hard to get up to speed. It still gets up to speed and runs ok but on the takeoff seems sluggish. Do I need a tune up should I fill with a high octane gas, or change the fuel filter? I love this truck and want it to continue to stay up to par. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am a young female and want to know what I am looking at before I take it to a shop so I am not taken advantage of. Around my hometown I have heard some real horror stories about mechanics throwing more into the estimate so they get more money when young girls bring in their vehicles.

Well it sounds lyk u need to take it on a back road and blow it out no i dont mean blow it up blow it out means to be at 0 mph floor it and hold it untill ure up to about 65 or 70 then kinda slow down and do it again and if that dont take the slow starts out of it then get a tune up

at 90 K it needs plugs/wires and other tune up stuff...the dealer will try to clip you for the offical 90/100K tune up 500 dollars...tell them ur poor and only got 200 or 250 and to do the best they can for that money... most of the 500 is money in their pockets... not actual repair/replacement...
