2004 Mazda RX-8 Engine Recall?

A.K.

My dad just bought a 2004 RX-8. The engine has a hard time turning on and the battery doesn't seem to be the problem since the lights dont flicker or dim. Also the car sounds bad when running. I'm pretty sure the engine is about to go out.

My question is:

Did mazda issue a recall on the engines or just extend a warranty?

I called the dealership and the guy told me that there isnt a recall and that they just extended the warranty to 8 years or 100,000 miles. My problem is that the car now has 118,000 and i called the dealership and it has never had the engine replaced before. This would no longer be covered by the warranty. Is the dealership lying or was there really no recall. Looking online it seemed as if there were recalls. Any ideas

The 2004 had a couple of different recalls; which are outlined here: http://www.autorecalls.us/aut-02/recalls/mazda/rx-8/index.html

Rotary engines are really awesome...if you maintain them properly. That car already has 118K on it and you have no idea how that car's been treated so it's not fair to blame Mazda. The recalls didn't affect all the cars, so you'll have to do some research before you blame the recall.
