2004 Kawasaki Prairie 700 Problem?

While riding the atv (2wd) the back tires suddenly locked up as if slamming on the rear brakes. Put the thing in neutral and the tires rolled. Buddy that was with me said he thought I broke the drive belt. My question is - is it that simple of just a drive belt breaking or is there something else to it. The engine runs fine, put it in High/Low/or Reverse - hit the gas and nothing. Thanks
