My car's check engine light came on last night while driving. A couple of seconds later, the car started acting like it was in neutral even though it was in drive. Every time I would press the gas the rpm gauge would shoot up but the car would not go. I tried putting it in neutral (the car is still moving at this point) then back into drive but nothing would happen. After a couple of times pressing on the gas, the car finally jerks forward until it got up to about 20mph at which time it happens again. The car finally stopped, I put it in park and then back in drive and nothing happens. I'm able to get home and the next morning go out to look at it, turn it on, the engine light still appears, it goes into gear no problem, except this time there is a wierd hissing clicking noise coming from the engine. Someone told me my trany clutch my be out, the noise sounds like a belt problem. The car is in excellent condition, never had any problems with it before and has 60,000 miles.

Its a bit difficult to tell if your car is a standard shift or automatic transmission.

If its an automatic then by all means check the transmission flud level once the engine reaches operating temperature.

If its a stick shift then it could be clutch or possibly the hydralic clutch being low on fluid.

In any case check all engine fluids encluding Oil and water along with the tranny fluids.

The Check Engine light will have to be reset with a computer at any reputable repair shop.

Best Wishes.

Have you check the trans mission fluid. Was it on the mark while engine is running? Was the transmission oil burn in smell and in color? The engine light will stay on till it is reset or clead. Transmission fluid should be change in the transmission and the fittler at arounld 50.000 miles. I have good feeling you will hap to get the transmission rebuild. To replace the the clutch. It take special tools to the job right.
There is one other item could had gone out. It the lock-up convertor. That may be the sound you are hearing.
