2003 JEtta HELP i turned my car on and the EPC light came on?

i turned my car on and the EPC light came on.( WHat is EPC).THen i presss the break to shift from park to reverse and on the dashboard the Press break logo was still on even thought i was pressing it. I cant shift gears. IT is just stuck in park. What can be a possible problemS?
