2003 honda rancher 350 4x2?

i got a 2003 honda rancher with electric start but in order to start it it needs to be in nutral there is a nutral light the last time i drove it the light dint come on when i shifted it would go into nutral and into reverse and first and so on, but when i shut it off it would not turn over and the light for nutral will not come on the reverse light will come on so i think i cant start it because of somthing electical
so my ? to you is what would be bad or make the weeler think its not in nutral when it is? please help i cant afford a shop to rip me off
