2003 Honda Pilot / Emissions / Check-Engine Light?

I have a 2003 Honda Pilot that is due for emissions inspection. The check engine light is on, so I know it won't pass (according to a test center). Therefore my first step is to see a mechanic.

The problem is complicated by the fact that I'm new to the area and don't yet know an honest mechanic. Any suggestions or advice on how not to get ripped-off would be appreciated.
 
The easist thing would be to take the vehicle to any Autozone parts store near you. They will retrieve the diagnostic trouble code that is stored in the onboard diagnostic system and tell you what the code is and what it means. And the best part is that they do it for free.

then, you can put a post out on Yahoo Answers to get more information if you need it. that MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) can come on for everything from a loose gas cap to a major transmission failure. Until you know what the code is, it would be silly to speculate on what the cause is.

I prefer going to Honda dealers for the repairs. In the case of the Pilot, there are still some items that are under the original emissions warranties that may be eligible for a no cost repair if you are within the mileage cap.
