I was driving my 2003 Ford Focus, 5 speed last night and suddenly the speedometer just stopped working. Several minutes later the odometer stopped working (the digital screen went to dashes instead of numbers). The "Check Engine" light then came on. I stopped the car and turned it back on, at which point the odometer and speedometer started working again. Several miles later they turned back off.
I checked around online and it seems like it's the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). Some have suggested that it's a fuse(I haven't had a chance to poke around the fuse box) but it would seem that a blown fuse would keep it from working at all (instead of intermittently).
My questions are: Is my problem indeed due to the VSS, and does anyone know how to access it to replace it? Also, it seems that there are two types of VSS, gear driven and non-gear driven. Does anyone know what type the 2003 Focus uses? I want to make sure I order the right sensor, as they run about $40 online.
Thanks in advance for your help! I'm especially interested to hear if anyone else has run into this problem with their Focus (or other Ford).
