could very well be alternator. The alt. charges your battery while you drive. And you say it stalled and wouldn't start tells me your alt went and then the battery took you as far as it could till it died. you can run a car on just the battery but won't get to far..... best way to do this is if you can get the battery charged (free at advance auto parts store) put the battery back in your car, hook up you cables, then start start the car. If it starts pull the power wire off the battery. carefully.. Now..... If the car continues to run the alt is good. BUT if it dies soon as the power wire comes off u need a new alt. this is a trick my dad showed me.
