2002 dodge stratus 2.4L 4 Cyl. DoHC, intake modification question?

Ok the round air filter simply seals to the hose and sits inside an oversized air box with a small air duct to pull air into the box, which is located in the front, if i cut a slot out of the box would that increase air flow effectively acting like a cold air intake without comepletely eliminating the box? Serious answers only, do not want to ruin my box just to "try it out".
 
don't cut it because it wont help it none,it will only take in so much air so cutting it isn't going to help it none,the air body you have on that engine is only going to allow so much air through it anyway ,so you,d be ruining a good box to do that,good luck.
