2001 YAMAHA WOLVERINE backfiring?

i just got done rebuilding this whole bike. I am having a problem with it backfiring. It starts and idles fine but as soon as you give it gas it starts back firing. Itook it on a ride around my neighborhood and it runs like crap in 1st and 2nd gear but when you get the rpms up and get into 3rd and higher gears it runs great. any suggestons?
 
HELLO; First put it back up on TDC and see if you advanced or retarded the timeing, while there reset your valve lash. Then ride it again and see what happens, if it is still sputtering use carb cleaner and as it idels spray a little around the in take and around the head and listen for the RPMS to change, if they do you also have a vacume leak. See if that wont fix your problem. GOOD LUCK....GREASY.
