2001 Toyota Tacoma won't go into 5th gear...?

My husbands truck recently just started not going into 5th gear. I suggested it was the clutch (he's REALLY rough on it) and he thinks he needs a new transmission. Has anyone ever run into this? Suggestions? I drove the truck yesterday and when you try and put the shifter in 5th it just slips right out and grinds when you try and put it back. Even if you let the clutch out slowly while trying to put it in gear it just grinds.

yep. transmission is going. i had a nissan at one time and had the same problem. you could put it into 5th, but if you release the shifter, it popped right out of gear. took it to a trans shop and was informed the internals of the trans were worn or damaged and needed to be replaced, which involved either a rebuild or new trans

Sounds like the 5th gear sync is bad, time to rebuild or replace. If you drop the pan you should find brass or metal grindings in it.
