my jeep fired instantly before this problem started.
now i have to crank it over a few times before it starts. i have been smelling gas or something, diagnostic test showed misfires in cylinder 1,2,3. it idles really rough, when i take off from a light if i mash the gas it bucks severely, it kind of stutters, it hasn't stalled yet.
on the way home from work i took the highway, got up to 85 and it had mild hesitations, it is worse at lower speeds, and in stop and go traffic.when i first take off the misfires sound kind of like a severe exhaust leek.

i have been told it is probably the coil packs?
in 2001 the jeep cherokees had distributor less ignition systems.

my engine is an inline 6 so all the plugs are in a row, then it has a black bar that has 3 square coil packs on the top and 6 plug boots on the bottom, there is a plug at one end.

Other than bad coil packs, what else could cause the misfires and the sputtering?
It has new plugs about a month old.
also, sometimes the check engine light stays on and when it starts acting up it the engine light blinks.
