2001 honda civic manuel transmission help!?

Hey guys, i have a 2001 honda civic ex, with 80k miles on it, now the transmission is acting up, i heard its a common problem, i was wondering if someone could help me identify the malfunctioning parts and tell me how to replace them. 1st gear is fine, 2nd gear is slipping out, i have to put alot of pressure on the shifter for it to catch otherwise it grinds, and now 3rd gear grinds nevertheless but doesnt slip, it seems if i let it sit in neutral for a few seconds, then shift it works fine. 4th and 5th are fine. Honda deal says its a $1900 fix, so any insight would help, thanks - Mike
