My Ranger didn't start the other night. The engine was turning over and it would even seem to crank for about 1/4 of a second or so, just long enough to see the RPMs go to 2000 and immediately fall back to 0. I turned it over numerous times before giving up and calling a friend. When he got there I connected to his battery just to see if mine was weak, but that didn't help so he towed me home. The next day I tried to crank it and it still wouldn't start. I turned on the key and listened for the high pitch sound of the fuel pump. I heard the sound. After a few more tries, it just started clicking when I tried to start it. The battery was finally too weak to make it turn over, so I connected it to my wife's car battery and PRESTO! It cranked right up! I have been driving it for over a week now every day and it is still running fine, but I am dreading having to get it towed again when it decides to not start again.
The truck has 68k miles on it and the battery is less than a year old. Also, I changed the plugs and wires about 4 years ago, so I don't think that is the problem either. It seems to run fine, no sputtering, missing or anything like that. I typically use STP fuel injector cleaner once every 3-4 months. I used the better stuff in the black bottle last time which was about a month prior to my problem.
All that being said, I am still not convinced it isn't an intermittent problem with the fuel pump, but I heard the high pitch sound while it was not cranking up, so that makes me think it might be something else. Oh and a got a friend with a code reader and the only code showing up was LEAN FUEL. That was probably due to me pumping the gas the night of my problem.
Anyone have any suggestions of ways I can troubleshoot or test to see what caused my problem? I am very nervous just waiting for it to happen again.
