2001 Ford Escort. Tape player issues.?

I stick a tape in. It makes some clicking noise for about 10 seconds like its trying to read the tape. I can kinda hear the music for a couple seconds, but its going in and out like its not reading it well. It then spits the tape back out. I'm fairly certain theres nothing in the tape player because it worked yesterday and I know 100% that nothing was put in there.

Anything similar happen to anyone else? Any advice?
