I have a 2001 dakota and i am getting what sounds like a wheel bearing from the rear end it starts at 45 mph but goes away when you let off the gas and as soon as you press the gas it comes back, what could it be a u-joint?

its more than likely a wheel bearing or pinion bearing in the rear differential on that one,i have seen a lot of those with bad pinion bearings in them, its that or wear on the ring and pinion gear, which can still be caused by a wheel bearing, good luck.

Probably not a ball joint as they tend to squeak and do not stop but remain consistent. Have you had the rear end oil changed? If it is a limited slip rear end, (positraction), it takes a special oil and this oil does "wear out" over time. I have a 99 4x4 and the noise went away after my mechanic drained and replaced the fluid with the "special" rear end oil.
