2000 Toyota Celica GTS engine problems?

Hello i have a 2000 Toyota Celica GTS 6spd and the Check engine light came on and my friend has a 2000 Celica GT 5spd and we raced and he kept pulling away like my car wasnt getting enough power what could this possibly be because having 40 more hp over him i should have just been able to pull away but i couldnt so if you have any ideas on what the problem might be please let me know thanx
