LONG time ago (back in the 70's) they were separate units.

These days, when you go ask for a starter, the solenoids come pre-attached to them.

Just yesterday I replaced the starter on my 94 civic (did it myself). It came with a solenoid pre-attached.

Good luck.......

P.S. Actually the solenoid was bad (not even a click. I had to knock it with a stick to get it to engage). But I had to buy the WHOLE solenoid + starter unit.

I don't know much about cars, but I have been reading up on an issue our car is having. Doesn't want to start. Clicks once then nothing. Takes 7-8 tries to get it to start.

We have the alternator and battery tested. They were fine. We had the starter tested, it tested fine. We were told it could be the solenoid. Is that in the starter or a separate piece?
