2000 Pontiac Grand Am heat problems?

The blower works just fine, but sometimes the air coming out is warm and sometimes its not. I have not been able to find a pattern. It either works very well, or not at all. I bought a thermostat but its not real easy to get to, so I dont know if I should start with that, or try something else. Any suggestions?
 
Check the heater hoses going up into the firewall and see if it
has a vaccuum powered on off valve in one of the hoses,it may
be sticking or have a bad vaccuum line or vaccuum leak.
