2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ rougth idle?

4.0 SE 4-door 4x4, auto @ 80K miles

Great Jeep. But recently when I run it until warm, shut it off then restart it withen 30 min it will run ( idle ) like crap. If it was carb I would say it was loaded up as if you leave in N and rev it up it will clear itself out after about 30 sec or so. But this last time I had to clear it out the CEL came on and remained one for a few restarts. It is off now, but I think this problem is starting to cause other problems. I have no idea where to start. Looking for expert help as this is our fam anchor that I cannot have fail.
 
Some dodge products used to have a function where you can turn the key on and off and leave the key on the third cycle. It would create a flash code on the dash that you can interpet into a oe code for diag purposes. My 2001 Ram was like that. If that does not work you can take it to your local Autozone or Advanced Auto and hook it up to the scanner and read the faults on it. It sounds like a Mass air issue. If it is the V8 there has been a known issue with the manifold gaskets leaking creating a vacumm leak. Also need to look at how many miles are on the plugs. Since Jeep was being cheap they decided to put regular champion plugs in there motors. So about every 30,000 miles they need replaced.
