I have a 2000 jeep cherokee. Tonight I went to my friends house and when I went to leave, I got in my car, turned the key, and it cranked only once. I thought my hand might have slipped and let the key snap back too quickly, but when i attempted to turn it again my car would not crank at all. I just hear a faint buzzing noise while I turn the key in the ignition. Also, the lights, radio, headlights, etc all work fine. They do not dim when i turn the key or anything so i dont think it could be the battery. Nothing was left on inside nor was it sitting long enough for the battery to die. This has never happened before so I have no idea what the problem might be. From what I have read online about others peoples cars, it could bu numerous things.

Turn your headlights on ,if they are dim it most likely is the battery.A starter takes a lot of amps to crank where inside lights and the radio only take minimal amps.If your headlights are nice and bright check your fuses.

My gut tells me it's a bad connection. Check your fuses first. If all's well then unplug the negative battery cable and positive and clean. Follow the cables to make sure they're making good contact.

It could be the starter as well. bang on it with a dead blow hammer. It may shake up the solenoid a bit. or remove it and test it. Ground the body on teh negative. then use a screwdriver and make contact with the positive. Not u will hit two screws simultaneously. The big one and the small one. If it kicks out and spins, you're good. if not, bad starter. The cables need to be fat (try removing the battery cables) to carry enough amperage to make the starter work.

The buzzing you hear is the starter solenoid. It transfers power from the battery to the starter motor.

It's either a bad starter solenoid, or a bad starter motor.

Your Jeep is 10 years old and things do wear out.
