I have a 2000 Honda CRV that currently has 103k miles on it. Most sources I've looked into (briefly) say that the timing belt should be replaced by 100k or 105k miles at the most. I've recently been doing a lot more driving this year alone and will most likely be doing so for the next 3 years while I am in college. My questions are...

1.) Where can I get the needed replacement parts for cheaper than a dealership or mechanic shop that might overcharge me?
2.) Should I get the water pump replaced with the timing belt
3.) How much SHOULD this type of work cost and are there any possible ways to reduce the cost?

I'm pretty "mechanically challenged" and would greatly appreciate any help you could offer in the most basic of car language! Thanks very much!

A dealership will take you to the cleaners! A reputable BP or other garage is your best bet. Foreign parts are always more expensive to replace or repair so don't replace the timing belt unless you have to. It will cost you a small fortune to do so. If you buy the belt somewhere else and have someone else install it, you will probably be charged more, too. Leave it be for now or plan on spending $$$$$ for work that isn't necessarily needed! I would sell the vehicle soon to avoid the tremendously high cost of repairing it.

Most independent mechanics are not going to overcharge you for the part. They make their money on the labor and typically charge between $60-$80 an hour. If you are worried about it, look at your local auto parts store and ask how much they cost for your vehicle. Then you are prepared to have the discussion with the mechanic.

Definitely yes.

To replace the Water Pump and the Timing belt should cost about $600-$700 at an independent mechanic.
A dealer would charge you about $1400-1700.

When you get a quote, ask the person doing the work to break it out for you.
Take the # of hours it takes to do the job times the labor rate, add in the parts and taxes and you have your total.

Don't be afraid to shop around if something does not seem right.
