I have a 2000 SES model with the 24 valve DOHC engine and within the past month it han not been running right. The first sign was the check engine light triggered by both o2 sensors reading lean and no actual engin problems at that point. About a week or 2 later i noticed that the engine would idle rough and low around 500 rpm and if was a long light i was stopped at, the engine would cut off. I have absolutely no problems starting back up right away and when i turn the air conditioner on to max air, it does not turn off because the rpms stay high around 700. My mechanic turned Auto parts store guy told me to clean the butterfly valve, but isnt that a carburetor? Does my car have a carburetor? Ayone else have any ideas? a certain 10 points to the one who can help! Thanks in advance!!!
Also, i did try seafoam which MAY have helped a smidge, but then back to stalling out. I just put Lucas brand Injector cleaner into my tank, but its too early to see if it works. Does not appear to be though. Also i have not changed gas stations and i use cheveron.

This is an easy one. No, you don't have a carburetor, but you do have a throttle body plate (butterfly) which has a tendency to muck up with re-condensed oil, especially if you have NOT been using a good synthetic oil. Also, there is an idle air control valve located around the throttle body which also collects debris. Using spray Gum-out on these items, as well as through your PCV valve and hose, generally will correct the problem. Doing so with the engine running will most likely clean your O2 sensors as well.. When the idle air control valve mucks up, the engine mixture goes awry with it. This causes a loss of MPG's and power as well. You will have the best results if you can find a Mercury boat store and buy a product called "Power Tune". This chemical will dislodge any bits of carbon or sludge built up on your valves, pistons, rings, and intake manifold. You will be AMAZED with the results!!
