When I start my explorer it will run alright until it reaches tempurature and then it begins to idle really rough, as if it is missing. It has been doing that for the last 4 weeks or so but when you accelerate the 'popping - missing' sound dissapears. However once you reach crusing speed it comes back. Then yesterday it began to backfire when I was at idle. It isn't a sever backfire, however it seems to do it every 3 to 4 times it misses (about once every few seconds). I however have not noticed it doing the backfiring while I am driving at highway speeds (might just not notice it?)

I have been told it could be the timing chain, spark plugs, wires, distributor, catalytic converter - anyone have a better sense of what it really could be instead of guessing? The engine only has 70k.
