I found out by removing the starter that the flywheel was wearing against the starter housing. I shimmed the starter out 1/16 of an inch, and while it quited down somewhat, it continues to squeal/grind. It seems like the flywheel is solid, no shake or looseness perceived. Could it be the crankshaft bearing have failed and the whole thing is walking? Or could the flywheel be warped or loose? It start only grinding a little, then got worse. It also has jumped and broke the belt a few times and we replaced the cam or crank sensor when the code showed it was bad. It has been to several shops, they all fixed one thing or another and blamed that. But obviously there is still a problem. The last shop replaced the water pump and head gasket that was melted according to them. This is not my car, but she is a waitress and I end up working on it for free. please give me some advice.

I don't know exactly what it is, but i can tell you that:
-The crank bearing hasn't failed: or the engine would shake a lot
-the flywheel is NOT loose or warped: or the engine would shake even more

yahoo answers isnt the place to be looking for major car problems. find a ford escort forum or faq page or contact your ford dealer.

www.feoa.net is your best source. Ford Escort Owners Association.

Some of the guys on there are insanely knowledgeable about those cars. It's almost scary. Otherwise, I couldn't tell you what the exact issue could be.
