2000 chrysler cirrus transmission problem?

So I own a 2000 chrysler cirrus lxi and I'm having some sort of transmission issue (its an automatic transmission). I don't know very much about cars so I'll just give you what I've observed and if you got any ideas I appreciate it. The check engine light is on, it shifts hard, and it usually won't shift past 2nd gear (its an automatic). There have been times when it will go into third when I first start driving but usually after driving for a mile or so it won't go into 3rd anymore and the RPM just keeps climbing to around 2.5k-3k when I go 30mph (it stays in 2nd even when I try to go to a higher speed). It always goes from first to 2nd smoothly except when downshifting. When I'm coming to a stop I can usually feel it shift down pretty noticeably.

I'm looking mostly to know if it must be a serious problem or if there's any chance of it being minor. I'm taking it to some auto place tomorrow but they don't do much on transmissions
(they don't rebuild them or anything) they said but would try to find the problem but in the meantime I'm just curious what others think.
I'll give ten points to the best answer if you care. Thanks again
