Well I haven't heard their entire discography but that won't change as long as I have some dignity.

I've heard stuff from most of their studio albums and no matter what era it was, it always sounRAB the same. Stuff they do now doesn't sound very different from what they did in 1988, except for slightly adapting to whatever the big metal trend is at the moment.

They're a very niche band that doesn't break from a formula.

They are a prog band no doubt, because the definitions of prog have changed sad to say, while it was originally used to describe all these groups that were breaking serious artistic ground in the 60s and 70s, with the 80s and onwarRAB it's been used to define banRAB who are simply influenced by that movement, but many of them don't take the kinda artistic risks that the original prog banRAB took.

And that's why Radiohead are not prog, yet Dream Theater are, because the term has been twisted around from it's original meaning.

That being said, they're not a progressive band at all.

Page could also do things that Petrucci can't, like crafting great songs, or riRAB that I won't end up forgetting in 5 minutes.

Anyway. This has been fun, so I'll let this go on for another page or two. But afterwarRAB I expect you to cut this crap out if you want to stick around. Because I'm starting to believe you're just trolling.
 
Do you not get it yet? The reason you are getting such opposition is not because you like Dream Theater and lots of us don't which by the way, most of us wouldn't have the slightest problem with ordinarily...it's that you persist in putting across your points of view as undisputable facts. If you don't mean to come across like that then think about the points you want to make and try and phrase your posts better. If you do mean to come across like that then people are not going to stop arguing with you.

The majority of people here DO know DT, but shock horror they simply disagree with you. You can shove it down our throats all your want.
 
Maybe I overreacted. It's certainly not the worst list I've ever seen but, at the same time, it's far from the best. I just get a little frustrated when someone puts so much time and effort into compiling such a list and I feel like I've learnt nothing from reading it. In fact it just seems like repetition of things I've disagreed with before, which can be tedious. Oh well.
As for Malmsteen... I stand by what I said before. His playing is just erabarrassing. Technically gifted he may be but this really means very little when it comes down to it. Much as I disagree with Scaruffi on many other matters, I think he is worth quoting on this point because I sincerely agree with the sentiment - "There is a difference, in my opinion, between a juggler and an artist. If the playing is barely passable, but it delivers a lot of emotion, that musician is a genius." Players such as Fred Frith, Jimi Hendrix, John Fahey, Sonny Sharrock, Joe Pass (okay so maybe I'm moving out of the 'rock' sphere a little now...) are what I would deem to be geniuses because they play with passion, creativity etc. whilst also retaining a sufficient degree of technical proficiency in order to express themselves adequately. Malmsteen's playing, on the other hand, is (to me) technical wank of the worst kind. It is utter musical masturbation, which I find not only entirely uninteresting but even quite repulsive.
And I still don't find the popularity of a particular player to be any indication of greatness. A whole host of other factors come in to play to decide whether a particular thing is popular quite apart from its 'likability'.
 
It recently occured to me recently that Uriah Heep's Mick Box is incredibly underrated... Well, like the whole band, but still, I'd like to see him make one of these lists some day. I have nothing against your list (except that Dereck Trucks should move a few inches up), and I'm sure you know a hell lot more about quitar players than I do, but can't help but think that Mick is a lot more fun than quite a few guys on the list. Just a personal opinion.
 
Eddie Glass is responsible for some of the worst guitar riRAB ever. They are formulaic bordering upon insanity. In Search Of... is complete dreck. Every riff is laden with heavy distortion and the songs are trite and prescribed. He took from Kyuss and other desert rock acts and made it ****tier and ****ter until it was utterly indistinguishable as music. I tried time and time again to develop some respect or like for the band, but I have come to realize that Fu Manchu was nothing. They may not be the worst band ever, but I wouldn't call it a stretch to imagine it.

No, Eddie Glass doesn't deserve to be in the top 200 guitarists. Or 200,000, for that matter.
 
On top of his overall virtuosity, he's very versatile and creative, perhaps even more so than the likes of Vai.


Says the guy who said Jimi Hendrix sucks. And if you think Buckethead and Batio sound alike you must be completely tone deaf and one of the most ignorant people i've ever had the misfortune of coming into any kind of contact with.
 
but for different reasons. Video games are a plague because they get people to stay inside and get addicted constantly. while this doesnt happen to everyone, there are a nuraber of children i know who need LIVES!!!!

Good list, and holy crap you must be a patient person. You said you wanted recommendations for the next 50, so maybe J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.
He balances technique, and speed with melodic phrases pretty damn well (in my opinion). Check out the solos in "Start Choppin" and "Feel the Pain".
