20 Animated Films Submitted to Oscars; 5 Nominations Seem Likely

The way I see it:

Up (likely victor, even with a likely Best Picture nod)
Ponyo (dark horse #1)
Coraline (dark horse #2)
The Princess & The Frog (could be a major contender if critical and audience response is excellent)
The Fantastic Mr. Fox or Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs

Don't see any chance of 9 getting a nod as it was neither a critical or commercial success (I didn't see it because I was extremely turned off by the advertising campaign which arrogantly gloated about how edgy and adult it was... not to the mention that it looked way too much like real-time gameplay footage from Xbox 360).
 
Interesting, that means that something like The Smurfs Movie would be eligible since the main characters would be all Computer animated.
 
Maybe it's just me, but I think we should wait till Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Princess and the Frog before making up our mind. Up still seems like the likely winner, but as far as dark horse candidates are concerned, we should wait.
 
As has been stated in previous pages... Shrek, Happy Feet and Spirited Away would beg to differ.



I agree. But I'm already calling 'Cloudy' and 'Coraline' as potential dark horses.

But really, it's hard to pick a potential winner because of the ones I've seen this year that are potential nominees.... it's hard.
 
Some of them are.

The fact of the matter is, none of them accomplish or as perfect or as big of the technical and cinematic achievment that Princess And The Frog is.

Listen, I like Cloudy, but the fact of the matter is that its a dime a dozen. There a bunch of other movies like Cloudy that are exactly the same.
 
One film that was eligible back in 2002 was Stuart Little, despite having plenty of live-action.

Up is a definite nominee, and I'd say it has 95% chance of winning. It may even be nominated for Best Picture, which will do nothing but help its chances. Ponyo is the only other film I believe has an actual chance of winning. The Academy loves Miyazaki, and I doubt they'll cheat him out of a nomination. Coraline and The Princess and The Frog are definite nominees.

As for 5th place, either Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs or Fantastic Mr. Fox. Maybe even one of the obscure movies.
 
Again I like Cloudy a lot. But Cloudy definitely those kind of pop culture jokes in there as well as passive-aggressive humor.

I'm just saying Cloudy is a good movie, but it is NOT an animated classic deserving of the award.

The only movie deserving of the award is Princess and The Frog.
 
Well, all I can say is...I hope the film is better overall than the 3 minutes or so that I saw of it on the web a few weeks back. I have a high tolerance for Disney sentimentality, but those 3 minutes kinda made my stomach turn. :sad: My enthusiasm for seeing the film faded quite a bit after I saw them. Hopefully the movie bounces back from those soppy, sappy moments and improves...but for now, I still believe that the best animated film of 2009 is Astroboy. Yep, I said it. Astroboy is IMO even better than Up! :D
 
I want it to be great, but the first five minutes previewed didn't seem very good.

Is it that much more amazing than Coraline, Up, and Ponyo? All three could win the Oscar with my approval.
 
And also keep in mind the sole reason there are ten BP nominees this year is because of the critically-acclaimed blockbuster films that weren't nominated last year, like The Dark Knight and Wall*E. Up will be nominated for BP this year, that's a freakin' guarantee.

And I doubt Coraline will be forgotten despite it's February bow because it's still one of the best-reviewed movies of 2009, animated or otherwise.
