20 Animated Films Submitted to Oscars; 5 Nominations Seem Likely

LOS ANGELES – A record 20 films have been submitted for best animated feature at the Academy Awards.

As long as at least 16 films qualify, there will be five nominees in the feature-length animation category.

Most years, the category has had only three nominees, but 2009 has been a prolific year for animation. The only previous year when there were five nominees came in 2002, when 17 animated films were submitted.

Submissions include a wide variety of styles, including computer animation of such hits as "Up," "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" and "Monsters vs. Aliens." There's also the stop-motion animation of "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "Mary and Max"; and the hand-drawn animation of "The Princess and the Frog" and "Ponyo."

Mod Note: Yet again...source please.

Yup.

“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel”
“Astro Boy”
“Battle for Terra”
“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”
“Coraline”
“Disney’s A Christmas Carol”
“The Dolphin - Story of a Dreamer”
“Fantastic Mr. Fox”
“Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”
“Mary and Max”
“The Missing Lynx”
“Monsters vs. Aliens”
“9”
“Planet 51”
“Ponyo”
“The Princess and the Frog”
“The Secret of Kells”
“Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure”
“A Town Called Panic”
“Up”

Any bets? I'm thinking Up, Ponyo, Frog, Coraline and Fox.

From the list for 5 nominations im thinking..

1. Up (winning)
2. Coraline
3. 9
4. Fantastic Mr.Fox
5. Astro-Boy

If I had to pick 5 that I think would make it to the 5 Spot nomination, it would be these 5

1. Up
2. Ponyo
3. Princess and the Frog
4. Coraline
5. Monsters vs Aliens

Yep, I'd have to agree with that list. I'd love to see A Christmas Carol get nominated as well though, maybe in place of Monsters Vs. Aliens which wasn't all that great. But that would leave 4 movies at least associated with Disney and while I love them, it would probably be overkill.

I was thinking about replacing Coraline or MvA with Christmas Carol myself, but then I realized how over saturated it would be with 3-4 Disney Movies on the list. Provided that Ponyo wasn't made by Disney, but it was distributed, so it somewhat counts under the Disney label. I just choose MvA to have a Dreamworks flick on it, and Coraline since I heard some good things about it, I need to get around to seeing both of those films in all honesty, same goes for Princess and the Frog.

'Up', 'Princess and the Frog' and 'Ponyo' are obvious, the rest is a little bit more difficult to choose, maybe 'Coraline' and 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' (since it got great reviews) or 'Monsters vs. Aliens'. I do think that 'Up' is probably gonna win, since it is Pixar were talking about, and the film was amazing. It seems like Disney has the upper hand here, but that's not really different from any other year though.

Meh. It won't really matter.

What's the point if Pixar is gonna win anyways. That's the only reason why I think Pixar just needs to to at least be involved in the "Best Movie" nomination.

What I'm trying to say is, that they steal awards, or steal the spotlight from even more deserving animators. You already won a lot of awards, Pixar, so let someone else take the glory.

I'm rooting for either Coraline or Ponyo, but most likely the latter since I liked that one better. If either of those films isn't in the top 5, that's one small fail on the Oscars. If both unexpectedly aren't in there, there's gonna be a riot.

So...they aren't invincible after all.

Actually, I understand Happy Feet beating Cars (which is odd, because I actually really like Cars), and I completely forgot about the second one.

Okay, I guess I feel a little better about that fact.

Just like I said before, I don't hate Pixar at all, they're just a little overrated.

YES, I really want five nominations because if there are only three is will be all Disney released movies. Not that I have a problem with that since ether UP, Ponyo or Princess and thr Frog (Depending on it's quality) will win anyway. It would just feel weird if only Disney movies were up for the award.

Actually not so much as Cars was the Black sheep of Pixar's movies (So far) while Happy Feet was the surprise animated hit of that year.

Though I fear Coraline will be forgotten since it was a beginning of the year release.

Anyway the five movies I want to see nominated
1: Coraline
2: Up
3: Ponyo
4: Cloudy with a chance of meatballs (I did not expect it to be as good as it was)
5: Princess and the Frog

Maybe Fantastic Mr. Fox as early reviews for it have been positive. And that would make it two Stop motion films, two hand drawn films, and one CG film. Yay for verity.

I say:
  1. Up
  2. Princess and the Frog
  3. Ponyo
and for the remaining two I can't decide between Coraline, Mr. Fox, Christmas Carol, or Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

Why is Alvin and the Chipmunks on the list? That isn't animated.

True, but this is the first time a Pixar film's gone up against a Ghibli film (no, Spirited Away didn't beat Finding Nemo - they were nominated seperate years), not to mention Disney's much-hyped return to 2D. That's some stiff competition for Up.

Expect it to get the boot. Arthur and the Invisibles got submitted and then disqualified a couple of years back, and I vaguely remember something similar happening with one of the Stuart Little films.

The Oscar for Best Animated Film will probably go to either Up or The Princess and the Frog. I really don't see The Fantastic Mr. Fox winning any awards. Even if the story is good, the animation looks horrible. I'm sorry, but it's really unpleasant to look at. Mr. Fox looks like some crudely made student film.

My predictions for Oscar Nominations for Best Animated Feature if it expands to five are:

Up
The Princess and the Frog
Coraline
Ponyo
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Up is a lock for a nomination and possible win, The Princess and the Frog is a return to classic Disney and I think it will get a nomination due to that, Coraline is a dark and delightful stop motion film which may appeal to Academy voters, Ponyo is Miyazaki and his films tend to get nominated and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is my dark horse of scoring a nomination but given the critical praise along with a good story and stunning visuals, it does have a good chance of securing a nomination.
