2 weeks post-op for ALIF surgery

Hi everyone.....

I am 2 weeks post op from my surgery. I was feeling like I was making good progress pain wise until about 7 days ago. I started having excruciating right leg pain. My pain med I am taking didn't touch the pain at all. NO RELIEF. I ended up going to the ER and had a shot to get pain relief. I saw my neurosurgeon yesterday. I had xray and blood work. Everything is ok. It has been determined i am having flared nerves. My gosh the pain is terrible. My doctor gave me a new prescrip for the nerve pain. Has anyone else experienced this terrible nerve flare ups after surgury? I am quite sure many has HA Durab question huh? What did your doc do for it and does anyone have any other suggestion? I also got a steroid injection yesterday which helped some. But as most of you know, it takes a few days to get full benefit from the injections. If it wasnt for this terrible nerve flare ups, I would still have pain but not nearly to this level. I know I have a long road ahead of me recovery wise, I think if I could get the nerve pain to go away, I would have a faster recovery maybe?

Hi Lynn, check out my post and page nuraber 2 titled....... "Hi all, Microdisectomy/Laminectomy and last Axialif, still in pain!!" I also have worse nerve pain than before the surgery, so I know what your going through. As for now, I am just dealing with it because I am not getting the Stimulator. No one has answered the question or post to the statement I posted which makes me wonder if many have had our type of fusion surgery?

I am sorry you are still in pain. It has been months since your last surgery too huh? Gosh, I hope my surgery results are better. My back and belly pain seem to be better. It is my right leg that hurts so bad from the flared up nerves. Makes me want to cut my leg off ha! The injection I got yesterday did help it some. But it takes a few days to get full benefit from that. Prior to surgery, i did get several injections. They did help but they were all short lived. You said you had a axialif? Whats the difference in a axialif and a alif? I feel as if my back is going to be a success. I just have the normal surgical pain in my back. I do wear a brace which helps me lots.Right after surgery, my belly actually hurt worst than anything lol. But that pain is almost gone now. Hope you feel better soon!

Lynn, you are not that far out and in case you don't know that when this surgery is done they have to pick up your nerves and move them to the side to get to the surgical site. The movement of this nerve is PAINFUL.

Also alot of surgeons put in this paste/nurabing meRAB in at the surgical site before they close you up to help with pain control after the surgery. It could be that this nurabing meRAB is already starting to wear off so you will experience an increase in pain. This surgery is not an easy surgery and you will have many peaks and valleys in the pain department for the next 12 weeks so try not to panic and remeraber that we are here for you to help you thru the good and bad times.

Sorry about that Lynn I was reading too fast. You had the Alif which is where they go in through the front and then the back if need be. That is not the one I had, I had the AxiaLif which can be seen here. ***REMOVED***

Good luck with your recovery and I hope all goes well for you. I still have not found or heard from anybody who has had the procedure I have with the problems I still face.

I'm sorry this has happened to you. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon. I had right hip and leg pain after my last surgery and it lasted for about 6 months before calming down. There are meRAB designed to specifically target this type of pain. Maybe your surgeon can refer you to a pain management doctor.

I also used a cane regularly during that time. Having something to lean on helped to not aggravate the pain and make it worse.

I hope it calms down quickly for you. How are you doing otherwise? Are you able to walk around some during the day? Are you resting as much as you can?

Hang in there, and come back here as often as you need to during your recovery. There are lots of us here who have had this surgery and can answer your questions from our own experiences.
