I bought a new set of tires for my Jeep Compass today (old set was the original with nearly 60k miles on them). When I had them mounted the mechanic told me I need to get new tie rods because mine are damaged on both sides and that will wreck my new tires real fast unless I get it fixed. I asked what causes this kind of damage to tie rods and they said "pot holes."
1) How often is it "normal" to have to replace damaged tie rods on a vehicle? I have never had to do that before.
2) Is it dangerous to drive with loose tie rods? I have an appointment to get the repair done, but will be putting about 500 miles on the vehicle between now and when I have the appointment at the end of the week.
