2 palms, one PC

I recently purchased a T5. After some early problems, I have it running smoothly and am mostly pleased with it. I wan to introduce my wife to the handheld world by giving her my old Vx. I know they use different OS's so I was wondering how we can share information - like grocery lists, some To Do's, etc. Do I need both OS's running on the computer? Is this even remotely possible?

Thanks,
Rick

If you're asking about hotsyncing both Palm's to the T5 desktop then you've got a problem. The T5 desktop is unique to the T5 and you won't be able to use it to sync a Vx. You also can't set up two Palm desktops on the same computer. You can beam individual items like memos and appointments between the two machines so you can share data that way but trying to sync to the same desktop isn't going work.

Did they drastically change the desktop with the T|5? You should be able to sync the Vx to the same desktop as the T|5 as long as it has a unique user name.

I can sync a Palm IIIxe, VIIx, T|1 & T|3 all to the same PC and desktop. Each Palm has a unique user name, this is required for syncing multiple Palm's to the same PC. Even thought there are additional features with the newer OS's the new desktop will still sync to older Palm's, you just can't use the new features in the PIM app's for the old Palms.

As far as sharing information among the multiple palms and having that sync is another issue and generally not possible. You can IR beam specific memos, calendar events, addresses, and To-Do?s as mentioned above.

Yes, the T5 desktop is the first that will only sync with the new PIM databases. These databases are in a different file format than all previous Palm PIM databases so you can't sync anything but a T5 to a T5 desktop. There is a workaround where you can force the old PIM databases to be synced with the T5 desktop but it also restores the old PIM skeleton databases on the T5. Because of the inefficient way the T5 stores data, this means a skeleton old PIM database like the datebook with a few thousand entries can easily take up 5 mb of storage. Forcing the old PIM databses to sync has also caused corruption problems with the T5 desktop. This problem isn't so serious with an OS 5.2 machine but an old OS 3.x or 4.x machine can cause way more problems than they are worth.

Thanks for the explanation, I guess that just adds yet another reason not to get a T|5 if you are a previous Palm owner.

It doesn't make much sense to me to alienate the entire existing Palm community as they have with the T|5. Seems like they would want to keep us excited and happy, oh well, I guess that's what dreams are for.
