For my English course, I need to read a 19th century book and write a huge essay on it.

I'm having a hard time choosing a book. I can choose any author from the 19th century, but I'm only familiar with Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters. Can anyone recommend a book to me? I really liked Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre, but I can't use those. I'm more of a science person, but I love romance books where the language isn't abstract or convoluted.

Why don't you consider Science Fiction, it's got the things you need. I would say Jules Verne, he's a 19th Century writer. Read A Journey to the Centre of the Earth. It's one of my favorites. The movie The Core is pretty much like it. He also has Around the World in Eighty Days, it was made into a movie starring Jackie Chan. Plus, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
You could also consider Moby Dick by Herman Melville, or The Call of the Wild by Jack London
I hope these novels will appeal to your taste. Enjoy your reading

Hi there,

Well, I think the most obvious choice would be Elizabeth Gaskell (especially "North and South"), or Louisa May Alcott ("Little Women").

Cheers
