1999 kawasaki jetski has no power for take off like its supposed to?

I have a kawasaki 1100 jetski its a 99 .When you hit the throttle it seems almost like something is slipping ,the rpms get pinned but the ski goes no where .If you hit gas slowly and gradually it goes fine but as soon as you peg the throttle it slips at any speed ..If it were a car i would say its the tranny..any suggestions to what it may be?
