1999 Jeep Wrangler. Battery charging guage red lined high?

I was messing with the fan switch (seems to not work) and about then I saw the check engine light was on, and the guage that registers battery (charging?) was red-lined high instead of its normal 14. Got home, turned jeep off, turned it back on, seemed normal. What does the guage really mean and what is going on. Thanks
