1999 Ford F-250 4x4 transmission problems?

I have a 6.8L V10 Ford F-250 4x4 and I've been "hot roddin" it around a bit lately and now at about 1700 RPM it starts to make a noticeable odd vibration rattling type sound and continues on until about 2000 RPM then goes away when it shifts. Also when I let off the gas it immediately shifts really hard. And when I go from R to D or D to R I can hear a loud pop. I'm assuming this is a tranny problem? It's not crucial to get fixed at the moment as far as I know, but I'm curious if anyone knows what it could be that is causing it to do this?

Sounds like a bad U joint to me. The vibration is a good sign of this. a couple of ways to check this, blocking the wheels and setting the E brake place the transmission in Neutral and check the drive line, start at the back of the drive line where it meets the axel and attempt to move it up down or left right, if it moves the joints are bad, do the same at the center (IF equipped) and at the transmission.

if you hear it clunk when it shifts only from first to second and if you go from D to R and back, and forth, have a helper do this with the brake on and climb underneath to listen near the driveshaft u-joints. you dont want it to roll, so you can grab the driveline to see if you feel the clunk. if not present in the u-joints, then it is internal.
does to get worse in 4-low when you drive it?
if you do this and want more info, email me
