1999 dodge avenger transmission problems?

Overnight my car has gone from driving fairly normal to now after starting this morning and driving to work, i noticed a higher pitched buzzing or ringing sound, and the car would almost freeze up in gear, to where you couldn't accelerate, and all while hearing this noise, noticing the rpms rising, until eventually in just kinda kicks into gear, rather staggering like. The car seems to be pretty undrivable, and the check engine light has come on. Other than bringing it into an advandced auto parts store and having them hook it up to a diagnosis, i don't know how this could happen overnight! Selenoid? what else could it be?
 
Its 10 years old it happens. Its probably a bad tranny sensor and yes very easy to fix.
 
Could be either transmission input or output sensor going out. If so, not a hard fix.
