1998 Jeep Cherokee A/C Compressor?

At first I couldn't get my compressor to kick on but than I figured out how to get it going by taping the magnets with a screwdriver and than it kicks on and stays on for a while but after a while it turns off and I have to do that every time I turn on the car or it turns off. I hear that the compressor wont kick on if it doesn't have the right amount of freon in it. Do you think its because of not having enough freon or because the compressor is bad? Thank you for your answers. (Also I do not wanna hear answers like bring your car in to your mechanics and ask them because wouldn't that completely defeat the purpose of asking this question? Exactly. Thanks.)

If you can tap the magnetic clutch with a screw driver and get it to work, I would place my bet on the problem being the compressor clutch. I really doubt that that problem could be caused by not having enough refrigerant... the amount in the system doesn't have to be that exact. If it's blowing cold then it's probably got enough.
