1998 Honda Shadow Oil Light?

Just picked up a '98 Honda Shadow deluxe. Low Mileage and bike runs great already put a thousand miles on it in a month. first cold morning this season (35 degrees) bike started with no problem but the oil light remained lit. Rode a few miles to work and that afternoon start-up (55 degrees) light went out at start up as it should. I ride year round.
 
the oil is cold and thick try a thinner oil 10 w 40 should work but I'm sure the manual will tell you which oil to use in colder conditions.
