I recently purchased a 98' Civic EX coupe auto w/ 151k miles. I had her checked out by a mechanic and I drove it twice. Along w/ I was in the car industry for 15 yrs and my dad is a Snap on guy. So I am not car dumb.
But something happened today I've never witnessed. Driving down freeway at 70mph. Out of no were the speedo just falls to zero and my check engine light comes on. I lightly tap my brakes and the speedo will work only while the brakes are on.
Then I get off freeway onto normal 35mph roads and the speedo begins to work again. And continues to work fine for the next 4 hours while I drive around town doing 5mph -60mph. But the check engine light is on and I have on occasion about a 10% lag at take off.
But then as I entered the freeway to come home, almost like the car knew I was getting on the freeway. Once again the speedo falls to zero. And again it will work if I tap my brakes. But then I also realize it will fully function if I turn cruise on. Turn cruise off and it falls back to zero.
I know this has to be a relay or something. Anyone have a clue before I hit up AutoZone or something tomorrow for a code from the light.
