1998 Ford Taurus. About 105k miles. 3.0L GL.

When I hit the pedal to accelerate the engine will begin to stumble and die. If I accelerate slowly there is no problem. I can be doing 30mph and hit it or at a stop and do it. No matter what if I hit the gas hard it will start to die. If I continue to hit the gas the problem gets worse or stays the same. If I let off of the gas and slowly increase throttle it typically stops. The main problem is, if I am going up a hill and increase the throttle to accelerate up the hill it will do it and I can sometimes not make it up hills.

I had a problem where the car would turn over but not start for some time. I was able to get it started with starter fluid at first but eventually that did not work either. I changed the fuel filter. Now the car will usually start on its own but I am still having this problem with the stumbling.

Also there are no codes. I have had the idle increase on its own a couple times like the IAC Valve was maybe going if that means anything.

Please give me some ideas on what to check.

Thanks much.
