1998 ford explorer chuggs then dies ther is soot and thick black smoke coming

out off tail pipe what wrong? my 1998 for was working finr yesterday then today would not stay started it chuggs then stops and there is black smoke and soot coming out of the tail pipe i checked the oil it seems to be fine what could be wrong
