1998 cadillac Fuel pump?

I have a 1998 Cadillac ( 120,000 miles ). I am thinking about changing the fuel pump. Is it time to do this ?
I had a car that the fuel pump went out at 160,000 miles and don't want a repeat when I can change it at home and not have it towed ($500 for everything!) when I can change it myself for about $150.
Any Advice or warnings ?

In some G.M. vehicles you may be able to change the electric pump by itself. And reuse the gauge sending unit. I know you can do this in Chevy and G.M.C. trucks. Check to see if you can do it with your caddy. I had to replace the pumpin a chevy recently. The pump itself, and they recomend you replace the pick up tube filter. Was about $70 bucks. The whole thing was about $150.

There is no guarantee the new pump will last longer than the one you have. Use the $150 to buy towing insurance through your insurance co. ( you may already have it, it is about ten dollars a year). Use the difference to pay off your credit cards that you are paying high interest on. Then when or if your car breaks down. you can deal with it from there.
