I've had the rad ckecked and coolant is full, however when they ckd the place where you add coolant it was very gooey, like there was oil in the mix - could someone have added oil in error, or could there be another problem? I understand that this needs changing every two years in older cars, so I will do that. Someone suggest it could result in replacement of head gasket?
Any comments would be appreciated.

If you have blown head gasket or another source of oil mixing with the water the coolant will have a chocolate milky color in it and the car should more than likely be heating and have white smoke coming out of the exhaust. What it sounds like to me is the car needs a good cooling system flush. GM in the 90's starting using a exclusive coolant called Dex-cool and if mixed with other coolants or not properly maintained gets a rusty looking goop. That goop could be interfering with the sensor that checks the coolant level and be giving a false reading. I'd suggest taking it to a shop you trust and have them flush it and see if that solves your problem
