1997 toyota 4runner transmission problem?

when i started it the A/T P light was on next to the fuel gauge. when i put it in drive the light went away but when i put it back in park it made a grinding noise and the light came back on. in park it just rolled backwards and it wouldn't go in drive either. transmission completely gone with no warning signs.

linkage loose or out of adjustment? beware of unscrupulous transmission shops that only want to sell you a transmission. try a regular repair shop. shop around. I usually change trans fluid and filter first when having trans problems.
